Simple Twist of Fate (cover)

Bob Dylan

It’s been a long time since I’ve played this song. When I first learned it, some 15 years ago, it opened up a lot of writing possibilities. I had never played guitar in an open tuning1 before this song.

Playing in this tuning again felt like an access point to a younger version of myself. Many memories, and songs I wrote from that time, songs I hadn’t thought about for a while, started to surface; it made me think about what a song key or a guitar tuning might hold…but I’ll leave all that for the next letter.

I hope this finds you well. If you missed last week’s letter, there’s still time to request a song you wish for me to cover for the new year. You can do so here.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

love,
David

Open tuning is where the open strings produce a chord when strummed. This is different from standard tuning—the most common way to tune a guitar—where the open strings produce something fairly skronky when strummed.
